When considering how to effectively reach Generation Y, marketers must consider the “Helicopter” mom and family effects…represented by mothers in the US and expanded family units in China. “Helicopter” refers to a trend of parenting or family interaction that is more protective and involved than in the past two generations. Mid to late (1954 – 1962) Baby Boomer mothers in the US and the extended families of Single Child Generation youth are having a significant impact on these consumers who tend to be less individualistic and trend-followers, rather then trend-setters.
